Hydrogen fuel cells represent an electrochemical energy conversion technology that directly transforms the chemical potential of hydrogen and oxygen into electrical power. Operating on the reverse principle of water electrolysis, these systems feature separate anode and cathode chambers where hydrogen oxidation and oxygen reduction reactions occur. The proton exchange membrane (PEM) facilitates ionic conduction while forcing liberated electrons through an external circuit, generating usable electricity. A complete fuel cell power system integrates multiple single cells into modular stacks, each comprising membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) sandwiched between precisely engineered bipolar plates that manage gas distribution and current collection.
